The National Forestry Herbarium at Scion is the largest reference collection in New Zealand of plant species relevant to commercial forestry.

It holds over 24,000 catalogued specimens, specialising in conifers, eucalypts and species commonly grown as amenity trees. It also acts as the regional herbarium for indigenous and adventive flora of the Bay of Plenty and central North Island of New Zealand.

The National Forestry Herbarium provides plant identification services to forestry clients and others, supplying information on the taxonomy and ecology of plants, including weeds, significant to forestry.

Herbarium staff also provide expertise on the ecology and taxonomy of local native flora. The herbarium is a member of the New Zealand National Herbarium Network, an alliance of 19 herbaria containing well over 1,330,000 specimens. Curators exchange specimens and information, accessing many specialised collections around the country.
