SilviScan®

SilviScan® offers a fast, cost-effective and non-destructive wood analysis service for forest growers and users. With technology originally developed by CSIRO, Ensis can measure a range of wood properties in samples easily prepared from 12 mm increment cores. This can help determine the optimum and most valuable end use of the wood and can predict paper properties or the strength of sawn timber from tree structure. 

Sample preparation 

Ensis can assist in planning the sampling program and undertake the sampling if required. This removes the need to invest in coring equipment and sample handling.

Analyses and interpretation

• SilviScan® combines x-ray densitometry, diffractometry and image analysis to measure a variety of properties in the one sample including microfibril angle, fibre diameter, wood density and others.
• Readings are provided 100 to 1000 times faster than conventional methods.
• Reports and data will be delivered electronically via the internet or on CD. Hard copy can be provided upon request.
• Assistance in the analysis and interpretation of the data is also available if required.

• The SilviScan® team has received three major awards for its revolutionary achievements in technology:
• In 2001 Dr Rob Evans received the prestigious, internationally recognised Marcus Wallenberg Prize from the King of Sweden for his contribution to forestry in the development of SilviScan®.
• The 2001 CSIRO Chairman’s Medal was awarded to the SilviScan® development team for its work in developing and applying the SilviScan® technology.
• In 2004 Dr Rob Evans was awarded the prestigious ATSE Clunies Ross Award for his ground breaking work with SilviScan 3.
