Timber Engineering
Ensis offers timber engineering services through the Wood Processing group. It is New Zealand’s only body devoted principally to research into the use of timber and timber products in structural applications.
The Timber Engineering laboratory, based in Rotorua, has an impressive variety of mechanical testing equipment. Specialised staff offer the following services:
Machine grading support
In order to satisfy the needs of timber buyers it is necessary to grade timber to an appropriate standard. Ensis has developed machine stress graders and offers special expertise in helping clients to ensure quality. Staff can provide:
- Advice about installation and operation.
- Training of operators.
- Commissioning, calibration and auditing of operations.
- Quality systems.
- Viability studies.
Testing
Facilities and expertise are available to test small clear timber specimens in accordance with national and international standards (BS373, ASTMD143).
Consulting services
Specialist skills and authoritative and independent advice is available in areas related to the structural properties and use of timber, timber fasteners and timber systems.
Training and technical seminars
Ensis staff regularly run workshops and training programmes in a variety of areas related to timber engineering, such as glue lamination, wood property testing and compliance with timber standards.
