Forest Nutrition

Ensis looks to address the immediate needs of the forest industry, while also looking to the future in developing management systems to ensure long-term sustainable production and for emerging enterprises.

Research is providing answers on issues including:

  • Impacts of harvest residue management on site nutrient capital and nutrient availability.
  • Cultivation and weed control needs.
  • Changes in fertility of soils over time under both hardwood and softwood plantations.
  • Macro-nutrient requirements of eucalypt plantations.
  • Factors influencing responsiveness of mid-rotation radiata pine plantations to Nitrogen (N) and Phosphate (P) fertiliser.
  • Nutrient uptake, leaching and volatilisation from different forms of N fertiliser applied at different times of year
  • Impacts of insect defoliators and pathogens on stand nutrition and productivity.
  • Potential effects of whole tree verses stem only harvesting on nutrition and sustainability.
  • N and P management impacts on wood quality.
