Dr Clive Carlyle - Ensis Forests and Environment

Clive Carlyle was the General Manager of Ensis Forests and Environment whilst Ensis was an unincorporated joint venture, and now Clive represents the Australian group specialising in biosequestration and forests in the bioeconomy . Forests and Environment research more broadly focuses on new technologies and expert systems for enhanced environmental and commercial outcomes from plantation forests, as well as offering a range of capabilities in ecology, ecophysiology, growth modelling, remote sensing, silviculture, GIS and geospatial, forest inventory, analytical chemistry, biodiversity, sociology and planning, and soil science (physics, chemistry, biology, pedology.)
Formerly serving as Director of CSIRO’s Growing Plantations Centre in Australia, Clive is familiar with the wide range of disciplines relating to forest ecosystem function, monitoring, modelling, and the impact of plantations on the environment.
His personal research has focused on increasing the profitability and sustainability of pine plantations through improved management, based on a quantitative understanding of how nutrient and water availability drive growth. Clive led the development of a novel operational tool and new management systems that are improving the profitability of later-age fertilisation for four industry partners in South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania.
Clive also played a lead role in a national project to develop and test soil-based indicators, proposed under the Montreal Process (to which Australia is a signatory and an active participant), for the sustainable management of plantations. He continues to apply his soil-based knowledge to quantify the impact of management on production and improve soil conservation.
