Plant Classification

• Vascular plant genera (ferns, gymnosperms, flowering plants) have been placed into families according to the “The plant book” (second edition, 1997) by D.J. Mabberley which is based on K.Kubitzki’s “The Families and Genera of Vascular Plants” (1990-).
• Mosses follow “The Mosses of New Zealand” by Beever, Allison & Child (1992).
• Liverworts follow Glenny, D. 1998. “A revised checklist of New Zealand liverworts and hornworts”. Tuhinga 10: 119-149.

New Zealand Ecological Districts and Regions

All New Zealand specimen locations are placed in an Ecological District and Ecological Region. The ecological regions and districts are based on: McEwen, W.M. 1987. Ecological regions and districts of New Zealand. 3rd rev. ed. in 4 maps (1:500 000). New Zealand Biological Resources Centre publication, no. 5.

Images

There are now over 1,000 images in the database and progress is being made towards the aim of having at least one image for every species in the collection. Images on this website are low resolution. Contact the herbarium curator to enquire about availability of higher resolution images.

Most of the images of herbarium sheets have been taken with a Nikon D70s digital camera and using Nikon Capture 4 software.

Database details

The database uses Microsoft SQL Server with a Microsoft ASP.NET front end built for us by Zeta Ltd.
