About Ensis ⁄ Who We Are
Who We Are
Who we are

Ensis marks the beginning of a new era in scientific research and development.

Ensis was an unincorporated joint venture between Australia’s CSIRO and New Zealand’s Scion, and transitioned to a collaboration agreement on 1st January 2008.

Ensis represents a combination of Australasia’s leading forestry research organisations pooling together its knowledge and expertise to provide science capability on a larger scale than ever before.

By utilising the complimentary skills and tools, there is less duplication, enabling Ensis to provide better technology outcomes more quickly for its clients and partners.

Ensis aims to lead the forest industries into the future, covering the entire forestry products cycle through its 6 areas of research, formerly known as Business Units:

    • Ensis Papro
    • Ensis Genetics
    • Ensis Wood Quality
    • Ensis Wood Processing
    • Ensis Forests and Environment
    • Ensis Forest Biosecurity and Protection

Our Staff

CSIRO Forest Biosciences and Scion, employ over 300 staff located in eight sites across Australia and New Zealand, working in Ensis trans-Tasman teams.

Specialists cover a wide range of disciplines and maintain a high standard of scientific performance through research and publications. They also offer industrial research and development capability for specific problem-solving at the commercial end of the science spectrum.

Drawing on a solid foundation of knowledge accumulated over half a century, the collective expertise of staff covers every aspect of the value chain from seed to product. This involves skills which range from pure academic analysis to applied engineering ability.

Many scientists have dedicated their life to working in forestry and are recognised world-leaders in their field. Others have been attracted to forest industries science from outside the sector, bringing a broad range of experience to our industry.
